Summer Home Safety Tips

Summertime tends to be one of the busiest, but most enjoyable times of the year.  School-aged children are out for the summer enjoying their time off, summer sports are in high gear, and many families are fortunate enough to take a vacation.  Unfortunately, summer also brings with it the highest crime time of the year when it comes to home theft.  There are many things you can do this summer to protect yourself from losing cherished items in the unwanted event of a home theft as well as having to submit a homeowners claim to recoup the loss.  Here are a few of the most important:

1.)  Install deadlocks on your doors.  These locks are harder to release than spring locks for intruders, and many insurance companies offer small discounts for having them.

2.) Never post your travel plans on social media.  This could alert thousands of people that you aren’t in your home for an extended amount of time, which would draw the attention of thieves.

3.) Many break-ins happen in broad daylight.  Be sure to lock the doors during the day and not just at night. This has been a recent problem in the local area.

4.) Store valuables in your house in places that wouldn’t be suspected.  Many criminals head straight for bedrooms as that’s where most jewelry is stored in a typical household.

5.) Install an alarm system.  Most insurance companies will give a bigger discount for having a central call-in alarm system.  You could use this savings to pay for the system over time.

These are just a few things to keep in mind, and by no means an extensive list.  Please be safe and enjoy the summer!
